European Capitals 2011At the end of May 2011, I’ll lead student-travelers on the European Capitals tour. Over twenty-five days we’ll travel from London, England to Amsterdam, Holland; then through Cologne to Heidelberg and Munich, Germany; on through Innsbruck, Austria to Venice, Assisi, Rome, and Florence, Italy; to Lucerne, Switzerland and Paris France; and finally to Madrid and Barcelona, Spain. European Capitals Itinerary in Brief

Day 1. United States to Europe.

Depart Tucson. Fly overnight to London.

Days 2-4. London.

Arrive in London. Guided tour of city; visit Trafalgar and Leicester squares, Big Ben and Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace (if scheduled), and more.

Board overnight ferry to Holland.

Days 5-6. Amsterdam.

Arrive in Amsterdam. Guided tour of the city; visit Anne Frank House.

Days 7-9. Cologne, Heidelberg, and Munich.

Travel through Cologne (visit Cologne Cathedral) to Heidelberg. Arrive in Heidelberg. Walking tour of the city; visit Scholss Heidelberg.

Arrive in Munich. Guided tour of the city; visit Marienplatz and Glockenspiel, Dachau.

Days 10-11. Innsbruck and Venice.

Travel through Innsbruck to Venice. Arrive in Venice. Guided tour of the city; visit the Doges’ Palace, Piazza San Marco, Ponte di Rialto; see a glass-blowing demonstration.

Days 12-13. Rome.

Arrive in Rome. Guided tour of Vatican City; visit Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica. Guided tour of Rome; visit Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Piazza Spagna, Trevi Fountain, Colosseum, and the Forum.

Days 14-15. Florence.

Travel through Assisi (visit the Basilica of St. Francis) to Florence. Arrive in Florence. Guided tour of city, visit Piazza della Signoria, Il Duomo, Piazzale Michelangelo; see leather-making demonstration.

Days 16-17. Lucerne region.

Arrive in Lucerne. Walking tour of the city; visit Löwendenkmal, Mount Pilatus.

Day 18. Lucerne to Paris.

Travel through France’s Burgundy region to Paris.

Days 19-20. Paris.

Arrive in Paris. Guided tour of city; visit Montmartre, Sacré-Coeur Basilica, Place de la Concorde, Arc de Triomphe and Champs-Élysées, Tuileries Garden and Louvre, Latin Quarter, Notre Dame Cathedral, Versailles, and Eiffel Tower, and more.

Board overnight train to Madrid.

Days 21-22. Madrid.

Arrive in Madrid. Guided tour of the city; visit Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor, Palacio Real at Plaza del Oriente, visit the Prado.

Days 23-25. Barcelona.

Arrive in Barcelona. Guided tour of the city; visit La Sagrada Familia, Plaza de Catalunya, and Parque Guell.

Return home to Tucson.
